Viking settlers who settled in Arklow in the 9th century named Arklow, it was called ’Arn-kell’ after one of the Viking chiefs called Arn Kell.

Early Menapii Settlements in Arklow – 6400BC
Prior to the Vikings, there is evidence dating back to 6400BC of habitation of the Menapii tribes in Arklow at the end of the ice age.

The Normans built a castle in Arklow in 1169AD and the remains of the castle can be seen today, a great tourist attraction when staying in Arklow.
Several chiefs and lords took over the castle from 1172AD you had Theobold Fitzwalter, in 1315 there were the O’Byrnes and the O’Tools followed by Edward Le Boitleir, then the O’tools clan again in the 1330's AD then by Lord de Birmingham. In 1641 Irish insurgents took it over but in 1649 Oliver Cromwell burnt it to the ground, a sad ending to a magnificent castle!

During the United Irishmen's Rebellion of 1798 Arklow was involved in several major battles. There is a famous Fr. Michael Murphy statue in Arklow who was killed during this battle. It is a nice tourist attraction close to all the hotels in Arklow and tourist information centres. The King's troops were victorious and the Irish rebellion put down. In the V.T.O.S. Centre Wexford Road, Arklow there is a model of the battle showing the positions of the king’s troops and the Irish rebels.
